Overview


Established as a tertiary institution in 1870 and declared a university in1994, the University of Ballarat has a growing reputation for “excellence through effort”, not just from its students but academic and research staff as well. The University maintains its committed involvement with the broader community throughout Ballarat and Victoria in the areas of health, sport, education, business and social engagement. Courses are continually monitored and assessed for relevance to the needs of society and business while care is taken to create and maintain a supportive and encouraging environment for students in which they can excel in the learning and preparation for career or further studies.


Location

Ballarat is located about an hour’s drive west of Melbourne, the capital of Victoria. It is a provincial city situated in the Victorian Highlands and known for its historic goldfields, its role in the formation of democracy in Australia and in shaping the distinctively Australian character. South of Ballarat is Bell’s Beach, well-known to surfers, at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road which runs for hundreds of miles through beautiful coastal regions, and to the west lie the Grampian Mountains with their unique natural beauty and significance to aboriginal history.

Campuses

Mt Helen Campus is located about 10 kilometres from the CBD and is well-resourced with up-to-date facilities for teaching and learning, research, student accommodation and sporting activities. This campus also hosts a Technology Centre and IBM’s South East Asia’s Pacific office.
    
Camp Street Campus is the university’s new state-of-the-art, purpose-built visual and performing arts complex. The Arts Academy is located here, along with student apartments, and the immediate area is well-supplied with cafes, theatres and craft galleries. Ballart’s Fine Art gallery is nearby.
    
SMB Campus hosts the TAFE Division of the university in the centre of Ballarat, with modern facilities housed in historic settings dating back to 1870. The TAFE Division provides certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses for students.

Ararat, Stawell and Horsham Campuses are rural centres in western Victoria that provide TAFE-level courses. However, international students don’t enrol at theses campuses.

English Courses


The university provides specialist staff to provide one-on-one language support to students in every aspect of their academic and educational activities, including accessing information resources and developing their English skills.

 
 

Entry Requirements

Academically, students are required to have successfully completed at least one year of study at a recognised tertiary or post-secondary institution. Students from the US need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

English language requirements are generally an IELTS minimum of 6.0 with no individual scores less than 5.5 or a TOEFL minimum of 550, including written English (or a minimum of 213 on the computer test with essay rating).


Enrolment dates


Semester 1 - November 24th of the previous year
Semester 2 - May 15th of the current year
It is a good idea for students to send their applications as early as possible in order to arrange accommodation and student visas.


Student activities


There is a programme of ongoing social activities for students throughout the semester, which includes day and weekend trips, musical concerts and other similar events. Students also organise social activities among themselves and there are the cafes, restaurants, theatres and galleries that provide sources of entertainment and social interaction. The campus sport and recreation facilities also offer opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation.
